Portrait #4, Mixed Media, 58” x 68”, 2011
Alongside the start of summer, Sandra Lee Gallery debuts a solo exhibition by Bay Area artist Michal Gavish. Titled MY Objectivity, Gavish’s newest exhibition will feature a multimedia installation of artworks inspired by artist residencies completed in Eastern Europe, where for a period of four months the artist researched her personal history, while examining its place between fact and fiction.
Adopting her own rules of objectivity, the artist attempted to extract her interrupted family history through the process of portraiture and reenactment. Through a lengthy ritual of drawing larger than life portraits from old photographs while calling back family stories, the artist connected details and started to recover biographies of family members whom she had never met. Instead of filling in the gaps between the photographs and stories with conjecture, the artist developed a new scenario to endow her family with an alternative history. Through this homage she gave them a wishful new history line in a memorial to the future life they never had.
Michal Gavish’s exhibition will be on view June 5th – 28th, 2012, with an artist reception on Saturday, June 9th, from 4:00pm-6:00pm. This San Francisco Art Institute graduate has shown extensively across the country and abroad, most recently in Germany, Hungary, Israel and San Francisco.
