Jeffrey Palladini, Pool #1, Oil and charcoal on wood, 41 x 61″.
Sandra Lee Gallery proudly announces Recent Works, a solo exhibition featuring works by Jeffrey Palladini, on display August 2 – 28, 2010. The public is welcome to the opening reception on Thursday, August 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, where the nationally acclaimed artist will be in attendance to discuss his recent works.
On view are Palladini’s oil and charcoal paintings on raw, wooden panels that hinge between figuration and abstraction. In these works, boldly rendered figures inhabit oddly de-contexualized scenes, where any suggestions as to place are connoted by colored patterns and shapes, be they the curve of a chair headrest or the cool aqua tint of a poolside setting. Palladini masterfully emphasizes both the depth and surface of the paintings, a seeming contradiction, while implicating the viewer in the act of narration as he attempts to fill in the gaps of the scene before him.
Certain qualities of the works, with their flat surfaces and extreme close-ups of human figures, are reminiscent of Pop Art, especially in the Movie Kiss series. Yet Palladini’s paintings resist such a simple reading. By abstracting the emotional content of the work and separating it from the normal markers of context, the paintings “tempt and finally resist interpretation, and yet they insist on encumbering our search for story,” as Peter Frank, L.A. Art Critic and Senior Curator of the Riverside Art Museum, notes in the artist’s catalogue.
Sandra Lee Gallery is proud to display a selection of works of Jeff Palladini, an artist who innovates and expands upon the tropes and styles of modern art, while contributing to the dialogue between art, history and the human element.
