July 23, 2011 – Sandra Lee Gallery invites you to contemplate the sensuous landscape paintings of critically acclaimed Russian-born artist Irena Kononova. Her solo exhibition, Calm and Tempest will be on display from October 4th – 29th. Please join us with the artist at the opening reception held on Thursday, October 6th from 5:30 – 7:30 PM.
Irena Kononova is the recipient of multiple awards and has been the subject of exhibits nation-wide. The artist expresses the melancholy yet stunning beauty of landscapes rich with historical setting. Upon viewing her paintings, one experiences a dark interior which reaches toward an infinite and radiant horizon beyond. Obscure pathways lead the viewer into gleaming vistas. Unearthing the innate yearning to escape in each of us, Kononova presents our constant struggle of being “here” and wishing to be “there.” The artist paints with a mastery of technique that creates the effect of transparency and illumination. One must look beyond the dazzling colors to make out the textile-rich consistency of the canvas. The mixture of sand, marble dust and oil paint add dimension to Kononova’s modern, expressionistic pieces.
