Sandra Lee Gallery is proud to present HONORABALE MENTION: a two person exhibition of artworks by Kathryn Arnold and Carol Levy. Both artists were finalists of The ABSTRACT Exhibition, and were personally selected by former Chief Curator of Oakland Museum of Art, Phil Linhares, in 2011.
Kathryn Arnold, a San Francisco based artist, exhibits one of her interactive 100! Installations for the first time at Sandra Lee. Kathryn Arnold’s concept and output are a result of intuitive nonobjective processes that contain her search for a clear, precise moment of visual magic. The 100! are thoughts, ideas and images all active within the mind. The canvas is a grid filled with 100 10” x 10” canvases, the end size being 10 squared, giving physical form to the concept of infinity. An interactive installation, the individual parts can be manipulated by the viewer. Like real life, nothing is static, yet keeps a sense of underlying structure in the realm of pure chance and chaos. Arnold received her BFA and MFA from University of Kansas, Lawrence, and exhibits her work extensively across the US.
Carol Levy is back in the paint with her new collection. The San Rafael artist describes her painting process as a “search”. She seeks balance between the delicate extremes of artistic formality in order to connect with deeper truths. Levy begins her work without any sort of initial knowledge, simply allowing the paintings to reveal themselves with each new layer of paint. The dynamics of movement, time, form, and chaos amalgamate to infuse her paintings with a life force of their own. Levy states “It is a dance, a movement back and forth….I want the paint to come alive and engage.” With this series of work, the paint swirls and dangles, the lines tangling yet revealing deeply organic structures. Carol Levy received her MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago.
